Eligibility

Open to all English speakers with a strong desire to improve the English language skills of students, sensitivity to cultural differences, flexibility and fluency in English. Minimum required commitment of 100 hours (about 6 months).

Application process

Call or email Volunteer Coordinator. Complete application and attend a training and observe one class.

Fees

$50 application and background check training fee.

Seeking volunteers to teach either one student or a small group of students. Instruction is provided at times and locations that are convenient for both the volunteer and the student. Classes are often held at libraries, community centers, apartment community rooms, local elementary schools, and sometimes in student's homes. No second language skills or prior teaching experience is required to become a volunteer.

Providing organization

English Skills Learning Center
Provides individualized English instruction to adult English Language Learners. Incoming students speak little or no English and often are not literate in any language. ESLC trains and supervises volunteers who then teach students twice a week. Instruction is provided at times and locations that are convenient for both the volunteer and the student. Assists with citizenship education.
